A high-profile robbery in Queens, New York, ended in the swift apprehension of two suspects thanks to the victim’s foresight in using Apple AirTag technology.
The theft, involving $500,000 worth of jewelry, took place in broad daylight outside a local pizzeria and underscores the growing role of technology in crime prevention and recovery.
The Incident
On a recent afternoon, 50-year-old Sandro Angiolini was attacked outside Rosa’s Pizza on 21st Street in Queens. As Angiolini exited his car, a black SUV pulled up, and three men emerged to ambush him. According to witnesses, the suspects forcibly wrestled a silver suitcase from Angiolini, punching and kicking him during the altercation.
Arif Chowdhury, the pizzeria manager, described the scene:
“It happened right in front of my window… They fought, they were punching and kicking him, and they got away with his bag. When he came in, he said they had been following him and his bag was full of jewelry.”
The suspects fled in their vehicle, leaving Angiolini with minor injuries and the devastating loss of half a million dollars’ worth of jewelry.
Technological Breakthrough
Unbeknownst to the robbers, Angiolini had placed an Apple AirTag inside the stolen suitcase. This small, discreet tracking device provided precise location data to law enforcement. Using the information, NYPD officers tracked the bag to an address on 217th Street in Bayside, where they apprehended two suspects: Brayan Pulido Pedina, 23, and Sandy Pulido, 22.
Both suspects face multiple charges, including criminal possession of stolen property, reckless endangerment, and unlawful fleeing from police. However, the stolen jewelry remains unaccounted for, and police believe additional individuals may have been involved.
Implications for the Jewelry Industry
This incident highlights the vulnerability of transporting high-value goods and the potential of technology to mitigate risks. Jewelers and retailers handling luxury items should take note of the role that discreet tracking devices like Apple AirTags can play in recovery efforts. These tools, while not a substitute for robust security measures, can provide an additional layer of protection against theft.
As the investigation continues, the industry is reminded of the importance of vigilance and preparedness in safeguarding assets.
