Gem Legacy Adventures, the for-profit partner of the nonprofit organization Gem Legacy, has announced the dates for its 2025 trip to Northern Tanzania and Southern Kenya.
The trip, scheduled for July 25 to August 4, will allow participants to visit artisanal colored gemstone mines, experience local cultures, and take part in a service project supporting one of Gem Legacy’s initiatives.
With only 12 spots available, the trip is open to both members of the jewelry industry and the general public. The itinerary includes visits to gemstone mining operations and a safari through national parks in both countries. The trip also includes a service project day, where participants can contribute to community efforts in the mining regions.
Supporting Gem Legacy’s Mission
Gem Legacy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, focuses on vocational training, entrepreneurship, and community development in East African colored gemstone mining areas. Gem Legacy Adventures operates as a for-profit partner, with the profits from the trips covering the nonprofit’s administrative expenses, reducing the need for donations to be used for operational costs.
Participants in past trips have shared that the experience helped them speak more confidently about responsible gemstone mining practices, a growing concern within the jewelry industry.
Implications for Jewelers
For jewelers, the trip offers insights into the artisanal mining sector, which plays an important role in the global colored gemstone supply chain. Learning about the operations of small-scale mining may help jewelers better understand gemstone origins and responsible sourcing practices.
Engaging with mining communities and participating in development projects also aligns with the industry’s increasing focus on ethical sourcing. Experiences like this could help jewelers communicate more effectively about these issues with staff and customers.
