The COUTURE Diversity Action Council (DAC) has announced the opening of applications for its next group of mentees. This program, which focuses on supporting BIPOC designers, offers mentorship, education, and networking opportunities within the fine jewelry industry. As the current cohort, The Luminaries by COUTURE, nears the end of their two-year mentorship, the DAC is seeking new participants to join the initiative.
Mentorship Program Details
“Our DAC mentorship program aims to identify the best and brightest of BIPOC talent and utilize our combined resources to provide the education, access and information necessary for their success,” stated Eric Ford, Precious Jewelry Buyer for Neiman Marcus and head of the DAC. “The fine jewelry industry already has a high barrier for entry, and while it is that much more challenging for those from marginalized communities, we firmly believe that these voices deserve to be heard. By pairing designers with mentors who complement their strengths, and providing education from experts in their fields in group sessions, we not only arm them with information, we also create opportunities for these individuals to expand their network and their community.”
The mentorship spans roughly two years, beginning with designers attending the COUTURE show in an observational role in their first year. In the second year, mentees may have the opportunity to exhibit their collections on the COUTURE show floor, working closely with their mentors and industry experts. Additionally, participants benefit from group education sessions, which cover various aspects of the jewelry business.
Impact on the Industry
By providing one-on-one mentorship and industry resources, the program supports underrepresented designers. Participants can develop industry connections and expand their networks in a competitive market. Ford highlighted the broader impact of the program: “We firmly believe that these voices deserve to be heard. By pairing designers with mentors who complement their strengths, and providing education from experts in their fields in group sessions, we not only arm them with information, we also create opportunities for these individuals to expand their network and their community.”
The Luminaries and Their Role in the Selection Process
The Luminaries by COUTURE will receive guidance through the end of 2024. They will also assist in selecting the next cohort as part of the program. The Luminaries include notable designers such as Alexia Connellan, Ama McKinley of Ilium Wing, Bliss Lau, Casey Perez, Hiba Husayni of ZAHN-Z Fine Jewelry, and Sasha Flynn of Adore-Adorn. Ope Omojola of Octave Jewelry remains a participant but did not attend COUTURE 2024.
Application Process
BIPOC designers interested in applying to the DAC mentorship program must submit their applications by October 8.
After an initial review, the DAC will narrow down the applicants and conduct interviews before selecting the final group of mentees.
