The Community for Ethical Jewelry (CEJ) has appointed Marianna Smirnova as executive director, bringing in a sustainability and responsible sourcing specialist with nearly two decades of experience in mineral supply chains, human rights and due diligence.
The appointment comes as responsible sourcing, supply chain transparency and sustainability remain key areas of focus across the jewelry industry.
Extensive Responsible Sourcing Background
Smirnova has more than 18 years of experience working on responsible sourcing initiatives across the minerals and jewelry sectors. Most recently, she served as senior advisor to the Global Battery Alliance (GBA) and the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA).
Prior to those roles, she spent a decade with the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI), where she served as senior director and interim head.
Throughout her career, Smirnova has worked with organizations involved in responsible sourcing, ethical jewelry and artisanal and small-scale mining, including the Responsible Jewelry Council (RJC), the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), CRAFT, IMPACT, the Artisanal Gold Council, Solidaridad, the European Partnership for Responsible Minerals, RESOLVE and the Watch and Jewelry Initiative 2030.
Focus on Industry Engagement
In her new role, Smirnova will work with CEJ’s board, members, volunteers and industry partners to support the organization’s educational, advocacy and stakeholder engagement activities.
CEJ focuses on promoting ethical sourcing, sustainability and responsible business practices throughout the jewelry supply chain. The organization provides resources and forums for industry professionals seeking to address social and environmental issues linked to jewelry production and sourcing.
The appointment reflects CEJ’s ongoing focus on responsible sourcing and supply chain due diligence. These issues continue to be a significant area of discussion across the jewelry sector.
Commenting on her appointment, Smirnova said: “Community for Ethical Jewelry has long played an important role in bringing people together around a shared commitment to positive change.
“At a time when ethical sourcing, environmental stewardship, and respect for human rights are more important than ever, I am honored to join CEJ. I look forward to working closely with our members, volunteers, partners, and leadership to advance meaningful initiatives fostering an inclusive and diverse community – one that supports artistry, creativity, equitable opportunities, amplifies underrepresented voices and strengthens meaningful collaboration across the jewelry value chain. Together, we can drive lasting change that benefits jewelers, artisanal and small-scale producers, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and all those whose livelihoods are connected to our industry.”
Leadership Transition
Brandee Dallow, president of CEJ, said the appointment reflects the organization’s plans to expand its programs and engagement with the wider jewelry sector.
“We could not be more excited to welcome Marianna to CEJ,” said Dallow. “For more than two decades, CEJ has championed the belief that responsible business is essential to the future of the jewelry industry.
“Marianna’s appointment reflects our commitment to building on that legacy. She brings extraordinary expertise, strategic vision, and a collaborative approach that will help strengthen our programs, deepen industry engagement, and help CEJ reach its next level of impact. I am incredibly optimistic about what we will accomplish together and the opportunities ahead for CEJ and the industry we serve.”
Founded to support ethical sourcing and responsible business practices in the jewelry sector, CEJ works with industry stakeholders across the value chain through education, advocacy and community-building initiatives. Smirnova will lead the organization as it continues its work with jewelers, suppliers and other industry stakeholders on responsible sourcing and sustainability initiatives.
