Simone Biles’ GOAT Necklace: The Story Behind the Iconic Piece

Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history, has recently captivated the world not only with her athletic prowess but also with a unique piece of jewelry.

During her Paris Olympics campaign, Biles frequently wore a custom-made white gold goat necklace, encrusted with 546 diamonds, designed by Calabasas-based jeweller Janet Heller.

The Making of the GOAT Necklace

The goat necklace, symbolising “The Greatest of All Time,” was conceptualised by Biles and brought to life by Janet Heller Fine Jewelry. Biles, having previously collaborated with Heller for a diamond Olympic rings necklace, approached her again for a piece befitting her legendary status. The design process involved discussions and adjustments to the goat figurine’s legs, beard, and horns.

“She reached out to us about five weeks ago to say that she wanted to do a goat necklace,” Heller revealed. The jeweller’s team, including bench jewellers and craftsmen, worked intensively to complete the necklace within a tight five-week deadline, a process that typically spans three to four months.

    Symbolism and Reactions

Biles’ goat necklace has received mixed reactions. Some admire its symbolism and craftsmanship, while others have criticised it. Biles, however, embraces both perspectives. “Some people love it and some people hate it, so it’s the best of both worlds,” she stated. She added that the necklace serves as a reminder of her journey and accomplishments, resonating both with her supporters and detractors.

The necklace holds personal significance for Biles, serving as a tribute to her journey and achievements. In an interview with the BBC, Biles shared, “It’s also kind of a tribute to my ‘haters,’ stating, ‘and the haters hate it so I love that even more and it’s just a special part of me that I have here.'”

    Janet Heller’s Journey with Olympians

Janet Heller Fine Jewelry has experienced a surge in interest since the necklace’s debut. Heller’s business, run with her daughter and a small team, focuses on personal client relationships and creating bespoke pieces. Despite the increased demand, Heller is not looking to expand operations rapidly but remains focused on maintaining direct client interactions and crafting meaningful jewelry.

The attention from Biles’ necklace has brought focus to Heller’s quality and craftsmanship. “Whenever I see that goat on Simone and whenever she touches it or looks at it, it’s really going to be so indicative of what she’s accomplished,” Heller noted.

Heller’s history of designing for Olympians began with a diamond Olympic rings necklace for long jumper Tara Davis-Woodhall. Biles and her teammate Jordan Chiles saw the piece and inquired about its origin, leading to their collaborations with Heller.

    Implications for the Jewelry Industry

The collaboration between Biles and Heller highlights the importance of personalised jewelry in marking individual achievements. For jewellers, this highlights an opportunity to engage with clients on a deeper level, creating pieces that resonate personally and emotionally.

Biles’ necklace also shows the potential for jewellers to gain visibility through high-profile clients and social media. Showcasing unique designs can help jewellers attract a broader audience and establish themselves as creators of meaningful pieces.
