The American Gem Society (AGS) has introduced two professional development initiatives aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of retail and supplier-side jewelry professionals.
Jewelry Evaluation Advisor (JEA): Focus on Intake and Quality Control
The Jewelry Evaluation Advisor (JEA) program provides training for retail and supplier associates in handling jewelry intake and maintaining quality control. The curriculum covers:
- Processes involved in jewelry intake for repair and appraisal
- Evaluation techniques for identifying and understanding repair needs
- Communication strategies between sales staff and customers regarding repairs
- Quality control standards relevant to repair handling
Participants who complete the JEA program, along with the AGS 101 course, are awarded the JEA designation.
Kevin Mays, CGA, Chair of the AGS Education Committee, stated:
“The JEA began as a vision from the American Gem Society’s Education Committee just two years ago. This course is a true collaboration between professional bench jewelers, jewelry experts, and the AGS team. It’s a testament to the strength of our community and our shared commitment to elevating the industry and empowering its members.”
The program addresses the growing need for sales staff to manage intake procedures and communicate clearly with customers about repairs.
Certified Sales Associate (CSA): Updated Entry-Level Program
The AGS has relaunched the Certified Sales Associate (CSA) designation with updated content aimed at new jewelry sales professionals. The revised program includes two components:
- Graduate Sales Associate Course: A seven-chapter course covering diamonds, colored stones, pearls, metals, watches, and period jewelry, along with content on customer service, professionalism, and basic sales techniques.
- AGS 101 Course: A brief online module offering an overview of the AGS’s mission and standards, concluding with a knowledge check.
Completion of both modules results in the CSA designation.
Kevin Mays said:
“By combining practical selling skills, foundational product knowledge, and an understanding of AGS Standards, this program sets the stage for success, empowering participants to deliver exceptional customer experiences and contribute meaningfully to their teams.”
Retailers may use the CSA program as part of onboarding processes and training for new staff.
